These two newborn bundles arrived last October and we had the most beautiful in home newborn session at their home in Edina, MN. I also photographed this mama's stunning maternity session at my NE Minneapolis studio which you can see here STUDIO MATERNITY and also because she got two blog posts and this one is the images I took on film in the studio ANALOG FILM MATERNITY. The camera just loves her. It was quite the dreary day but the light coming into their home became soft.
In home photography sessions can be tricky, add in a newborn and it's trickier, add in two newborns and it's the trickiest. But for in home sessions to work you need both room and light. Sometimes rooms that you want to use might get lovely light but there isn't a lot of space to work around. Or there is space but the lighting can be harsh. There is a ton to take into consideration. And I never want a client to feel like they need to fully clean their house for a session, decluttering is key. I will move stuff if I see it but things do get missed because honestly I don't focus on the background a lot when I photographing families. I'm way to focused on capturing your lovely smile or your connection with each other to care about that book that was left on the nightstand that you might not actually want in your images. So grab all that stuff and just put it in a room we won't be shooting in and be mindful of rooms that are in the background like kitchens if you have an open floor plan. It's best to put items in a room with a door we can shut. Just a little tip for your in-home session to go smoothly.
Photographing newborns in a lifestyle way is my absolute favorite. I am not a fan of posing babies. While I know this can be done beautifully it's not just not how I choose to photograph my families with newborns. I practice what I call "Baby Led Posing". This means that I don't ever put a baby in an unnatural pose. Sure, I do place my newborns for portraits, however I don't "pose" in the way that many traditional newborn photographers do.
My reasons? One, I don't believe that babies should be out of their parents arms for any extended amount of time. Two, I think babies are beautiful as they are. Three, Frankly, I don't think major posing is safe. And four, I don't want my photo sessions to be stressful. That was my quick reasoning and if you want to hear more please reach out! But let's get to the good stuff and share this absolutely beautiful in home newborn session welcoming twin boys into the family. I also wanted to mention that moms dress is from the studio wardrobe that I provide for clients making it super easy to look beautiful without shopping.
