If you want a cake smash that feels timeless, this is it. This NE Minneapolis studio cake smash session kept things simple, bright, and classic. And honestly? That combo never fails. It photographs beautifully. It also keeps the focus where it belongs. On your little one.

This session also shows why studio sessions feel so easy for parents. You don’t have to stress about outfits. You don’t have to overthink the set. Instead, you can walk in and enjoy the moment.

Cake Smash Photo Sessions

A Light and Airy Cake Smash Setup in My NE Minneapolis Studio

For this session, we leaned into a clean, minimalist look. We used a white backdrop and soft light. Then we added a simple white cake on a white stand. We finished it with delicate greenery and a “one” topper.

That style looks elevated. It also keeps the images from feeling trendy too fast. So a year from now, and ten years from now, these photos still feel fresh.

And yes, the frosting got everywhere. That’s the whole point. The tiny frosting nose and the sweet little smile always win.

Studio Wardrobe Styling for the Whole Family

Here’s the best part. Everyone wore pieces from my studio wardrobe.

The littlest one wore a soft blush romper from the studio wardrobe. It photographed so well against the white set. It also added the perfect warm tone.

We also styled the rest of the family in studio wardrobe pieces. We kept everything neutral and soft. That choice made the gallery feel cohesive. Plus, it helped every image feel calm and classic.

Because when outfits feel effortless, families relax faster. And when families relax, we get real smiles.

Minnesota Family Photos That Feel Real and Fun

Before the cake comes out, we always start with portraits. Every single time. This order keeps things easy. It also keeps outfits clean. And it keeps everyone relaxed.

We began on my white wall and white floors in my NE Minneapolis studio. That clean setup makes everything feel bright and timeless. It also lets skin tones look soft and natural. Then we moved over to my limewashed blue wall for a second look. That wall adds depth. It also gives you variety without switching backdrops. Because I don’t use backdrops. I built the studio so the walls are the look.

We kept posing simple and quick. We captured snuggles with each parent. We grabbed sweet sibling moments. We let the older kiddo move and play a little too. Those in-between laughs always hit.

These portraits matter. They tell the “before” story. They feel calm. They feel connected. And they give you family photos you can hang on the wall.

Then we brought out the cake.

Once the cake arrives, the session shifts. The frosting starts. The hands dive in. The curiosity takes over. And honestly, it’s pure magic. We lean all the way in. We let your little one explore. We let the mess happen. We document every sticky smile and frosting-covered chin.

That’s why cake smash sessions feel so fun in the studio. You get clean, classic portraits first. Then you get the full cake smash experience after.

Planning a Cake Smash in Minneapolis

If you’re searching for a cake smash photographer in Minneapolis or a first birthday photographer in Minnesota, a studio session makes everything simple. You get consistent light. You get a clean setup. And you get a gallery that feels cohesive from start to finish.

Here’s what you can expect in my NE Minneapolis studio cake smash sessions:

  • Portraits first, cake last (because once the cake comes out, we commit)
  • White wall + white floors for bright, timeless images
  • Limewashed blue wall for a soft, editorial second look
  • Studio wardrobe options (so you don’t have to stress about styling)
  • A full gallery that includes baby and family photos

And yes, styling matters. For this session, everyone wore pieces from my studio wardrobe. That made the whole gallery feel effortless. It also made everything photograph beautifully together.

Michele Quattrin is the photographer behind mQn Photography, a Minnesota family photography studio based in Northeast Minneapolis. She creates timeless, authentic, and refined portraits for families, babies, and motherhood. Her work feels polished and elevated, but it still stays honest and connected.

Michele brings over 15 years of experience to every session. She also has a photojournalism background. That means she pays attention to what’s real, not what’s trendy. She gently guides families so the session feels natural. Kids can be themselves. Parents can breathe. And everyone leaves feeling seen and cared for.

Her Northeast Minneapolis studio is calm and intentionally simple. It features clean, light-filled spaces and a curated studio wardrobe for moms and kids. That wardrobe support makes sessions easier, especially for milestone sessions like cake smashes. Families can show up without spiraling over outfits. Then Michele takes it from there.

When she’s not photographing families, Michele is usually living real life with her two teenagers and her dog. Her camera roll looks exactly like you’d expect. It’s a mix of beautiful light, everyday moments, and the occasional “why is this happening” moment.
