Holiday minis are back, and let’s be honest—they’re kind of the best part of the season (after peppermint mochas and questionable Secret Santa gifts, of course). For families in and around Minneapolis, these sessions are the ultimate way to grab those festive, joy-filled photos without spending hours begging kids to smile. Ten minutes, a little holiday magic, and boom—your 2025 holiday card is basically done.
If you’re curious about what actually happens behind the scenes at my Northeast Minneapolis studio, here’s a peek at the sets, the snacks, and the fun little surprises waiting for you.
Think of holiday minis as the shortcut to seasonal magic. They’re short (10 minutes), sweet (mini cookies included), and designed for families who want that perfectly festive photo without committing to a full session. I set the stage, bring the holiday cheer, and you just show up and enjoy.
The beauty of minis is how efficient they are—no one has time for a two-hour session in December. You’re already juggling school concerts, holiday shopping, and remembering which side of the family you promised to visit this year. Ten minutes is all you need, and trust me, it’s plenty. Kids stay engaged, parents stay sane, and everyone leaves with holiday spirit intact.
These sessions take place in my Northeast Minneapolis studio, a space designed to be both polished and comfortable. Parents love that it’s indoors (no worrying about snow boots and frostbite), and kids love that it feels like stepping into a festive playhouse.
The studio is flooded with natural light, but for the holidays, I layer in cozy, glowing details to make it feel like December magic. No mall crowds. No waiting in line for a rushed snapshot with Santa. Just your family, the music, and a camera ready to capture it all.
This season, I’ve created two different setups to fit different moods and styles (because not every family wants matchy-matchy pajamas—though no judgment if you do).
The Wreath & Bells
Picture a big, gorgeous greenery wreath with a crisp white bow and hanging bells. A cozy bench anchors the setup, giving families a place to snuggle close. It’s festive without being over-the-top, and it looks amazing on a holiday card.
2. Merry & Bright Stars
The second set is a little more playful—a backdrop of glowing stars with the words Merry & Bright above a simple bench. It’s clean, modern, and just the right amount of sparkle.
And because I love surprises, I may open an extra backlit setup for families who want something a little different. Think glowing, dreamy light with a hint of magic.
When you walk in, the first thing you’ll notice is the music. I play holiday classics (the fun kind, not the ones that make you want to cry in the Target parking lot). It sets the tone and instantly puts kids in the holiday spirit.
Next, we keep things simple. The whole session is 10 minutes. That’s intentional—kids stay happy, parents don’t feel rushed, and I capture exactly what we need. You’ll be surprised how much we can get in that short time.
Of course, no holiday session is complete without snacks. I usually have mini cookies on hand because sugar + Christmas = happy kids (and let’s be real, happy parents).
And then there are the surprises. I won’t spoil all of them, but last year every child left with a shiny jingle bell. (Yes, they rang it approximately 4,000 times in the car on the way home. You’re welcome.)
While the sets are festive, they’re also versatile. That means you don’t have to buy matching elf costumes (though if you do, I promise I’ll get the shot). Neutrals always look great, cozy sweaters are perfect, and jewel tones pop beautifully against the greenery and stars.
If you’re looking for a little extra inspiration, Parc Boutique in Minneapolis has a curated collection of simple, timeless pieces that photograph beautifully.
Pro tip: avoid shirts with giant logos or neon colors—they’ll steal the spotlight, and this show is about your family.
Within a couple of weeks, you’ll get a curated gallery of images to choose from. Families love that they can pick their favorites and order cards, gifts, or prints straight from the gallery store. It’s one less thing on your to-do list, and whether you’re aiming to have holiday cards in the mail early or sending out fresh New Year greetings, your photos will be ready in time.
Most families bring their immediate crew, parents and kids, but small extended families are welcome too. Just keep in mind that sessions are only 10 minutes, so the more people, the cozier it gets and the less photos you actually get.
Stick to coordinated, not matching. Cozy knits, winter whites, and classic reds or greens always look great. Avoid busy patterns, and let one or two family members wear the standout pieces.
Yes! My Northeast Minneapolis studio has easy parking nearby. No need to trek through slushy sidewalks in heels—you’ll be steps away from the door. Just a heads-up: keep your photo shoes off until you get inside the studio. It helps keep the dirt (and Minnesota slush) where it belongs—outside.
The best part about Holiday minis? They book up fast, but you can secure your spot right now. Don’t wait until December when your weekends are already packed and your kids are rehearsing for the third grade holiday concert.
Ten minutes, festive sets, cookies, music, and maybe even a surprise or two—it’s the easiest holiday win you’ll have all year.
