When Your Baby Hates Cake: A Real Day in My NE Minneapolis Studio

Every cake smash photographer has stories that don’t make the highlight reel. You know the ones where the baby refuses to smile, the frosting stays untouched, and Mom’s doing Olympic level soothing while everyone else looks on like wait isn’t this supposed to be fun

Welcome to one of those sessions.
And honestly It’s one of my favorites.

The Cake Smash That Almost Wasn’t

This particular session at my Northeast Minneapolis studio was meant to be simple just the kids. No stress no frills just a sweet celebration for a little one turning one.
Easy right

Well baby girl had other ideas.

From the second she arrived she was not having it. The cake was cute the siblings were adorable the setup was perfect but she wanted nothing to do with any of it. Cranky clingy and completely uninterested in frosting. Not even the tiniest finger poke into that perfectly frosted cake.

Her brother and sisters on the other hand were absolute gems. They played tea party entertained her and gave me plenty of moments to photograph while she took breaks (read cried in Mom’s arms). We ended up with the sweetest sibling images full of personality and a little bit of chaos just how real life looks with small kids.

The Mystery Behind the Meltdown

A few days later Mom emailed me and it all made sense. Poor baby girl had an ear infection during the session. No wonder she wanted nothing to do with the camera or the cake. She was just feeling awful and doing her best to get through it.

Honestly that little update made me love this session even more. Because even with a sick baby we still captured everything that mattered.

Making the Most of the Mayhem

When I say I’ve photographed hundreds of milestone sessions I mean it but this one was probably one of my toughest. Still that’s the magic of photographing real families. There’s always something beautiful in the mess.

Mom who hadn’t planned to be in photos slipped into one of my studio dresses to comfort her daughter and suddenly we had these tender natural mother baby portraits that completely stole the show. They weren’t the planned cake smash moments but they captured exactly what that day felt like love exhaustion and a healthy dose of humor.

And here’s the best part. Mom originally thought she wouldn’t like many of the photos and chose the smallest collection. Then she saw the gallery and immediately upgraded to the full one. Because even with a tearful baby and zero cake smashing the images were still completely worth having.

That’s the thing about cake smashes they’re not about perfect poses or Pinterest worthy cake carnage. They’re about celebrating your baby’s first year (and your survival of it). Whether they’re giggling through frosting or lying on the floor in protest it’s all part of the story.

What a Cake Smash Session Looks Like in My Studio

At my NE Minneapolis studio simplicity rules the day. The setup is clean and timeless white walls natural light and just enough room for your baby (and sometimes siblings) to play and explore.

Here’s how it usually goes

  • You bring the cake. Keep it small and simple think naked cake or light frosting not three tiers of fondant.
  • I handle everything else. Outfits from my studio wardrobe minimal props and yes all the cleanup afterward.
  • We keep it flexible. Some babies dive right in. Others need a minute (or forty). Either way we go at their pace.

And if you end up holding your baby in every single photo that’s okay. Sometimes the plan B photos end up being the favorites.

A Peek Behind the Lens

I always tell parents don’t stress. Babies can sense it and the goal isn’t perfection it’s personality.

This session may not have ended with frosting in every crevice but it told a story that’s just as real (and let’s be honest way funnier in hindsight).

The best part even on the hardest days we capture something worth keeping.

Because one day you’ll look back and laugh at how your one year old staged her first protest over dessert.

FAQ What Parents Always Ask Before Booking a Cake Smash

1. What should we bring to the session

Just the cake. I’ve got everything else covered wardrobe for your baby and even backup options for parents if you decide to jump in for a few photos. I keep the setup simple and timeless so your baby (and their expressions) stay the focus.

2. What if my baby cries or doesn’t want the cake

It happens more than you’d think. Babies are unpredictable and that’s okay. We pivot we adapt and we still get beautiful images. Sometimes those tearful faces are the ones that end up framed on your wall because they capture your baby’s personality perfectly.

3. How messy does it get

Messy enough to make it fun but don’t worry I handle the cleanup. Once you scoop up your frosting covered little one you can head home while I take care of the aftermath. No sprinkles left behind I promise.  And we always do portraits first, because once the cake does come out it's all over with.

Ready to Plan Your Own Cake Smash or Cake Avoidance Session

Whether your baby dives in face first or keeps their hands frosting free your cake smash session will be a memory worth keeping honest funny and completely unique to your family.
