Welcoming a Newborn with Photography

As a mom and newborn photographer here in Minneapolis, I know how incredibly special those first days and weeks with your brand-new baby are. Everything feels like a whirlwind of joy, exhaustion, and just pure awe at this tiny little person you created.

While those early newborn days can certainly be a blur, having professional photos taken is one of the best ways to preserve those fleeting memories forever. Newborn photoshoots allow you to press "pause" for a little bit and soak in all the beauty and wonder of your new addition.

Deciding to Book a Newborn Photography Session

If you're reading this, you've probably already decided that newborn photos are a must for your family. Good call! These pictures will become some of your most prized possessions. Just imagine pulling out those gorgeous newborn albums decades from now and reminiscing over every tiny detail.

The next step is setting up your session, preferably while you're still pregnant so you can get on your photographer's calendar before they book up. Depending on who you hire, they may have you come into their studio or they may travel to your home. Each option has its pros and cons, so think about what will work best for your family.

Making the Most of Your Newborn Photography Experience

No matter where you have your session, being prepared is key to having an amazing experience and getting photos you'll love. Here are some quick tips as you get ready for your session:

  • Get some rest! Newborn photos can take a while.  While I won’t be posing your baby in intricate poses, we do want baby soothed so swaddling and feeding might take some time.   Being well-rested will help everyone's patience.
  • Make a shot list of must-have photos, like pics with your older kid(s) if you have them. Your photographer will guide you, but it's good to have your ideas too.
  • Pack all the little necessities - extra diapers, wipes, a swaddle blanket, pacifier, etc. Having your supplies on hand makes things go smoothly.
  • Be ready for lots of feeding, shushing, swaying, etc. Babies run the show at newborn photoshoots! Going with the flow is a must.
  • Involve older siblings early on so they feel special. Having a new baby is a big adjustment for kids, so making them feel celebrated is important.

The Moments You'll Want to Remember

No matter how your newborn session goes, I promise the photos will be worth it. You'll get to commemorate those first days as a new family. The exhaustion, the tiny wrinkles, their milk-drunk snuggles - it will all be captured forever.

Newborn photography ensures that even as your baby grows up quickly, you'll have these images preserving their biggest firsts. The first time they gripped your finger, the first time they were cradled in Dad's arms, their first moments with their siblings. All preserved in beautiful, professional photographs you'll love.

So if you're considering newborn photos, I highly recommend taking the plunge! It's an investment that pays dividends in priceless photographs. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions as you plan your newborn session!
