Every once in a while, I meet a family that reminds me why I started photographing these fleeting, sacred moments in the first place. This outdoor session at the Muriel Sahlin Arboretum in Roseville, Minnesota, was one of those beautiful, unfiltered reminders. If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like when you mix golden light, warm fall air, and two wildly energetic kids (one of whom could probably moonlight as a small hurricane), well—you’re in for a treat.
If you haven’t been to the Muriel Sahlin Arboretum, add it to your weekend list. This spot is one of my favorite hidden gems for Minnesota arboretum photo sessions. Nestled right in Roseville, it offers a perfect mix of manicured gardens and wild beauty, ideal for families who want photos that feel both elevated and grounded in nature.
In early fall, the arboretum bursts into warm tones. Think goldenrod, soft reds, and that unmistakable Midwest light that turns everything a little more cinematic. The textures of the grasses, the winding paths, and the quiet corners to sneak in a snuggle shot, it’s all there. It’s the perfect place to capture authentic family photos in nature without needing to drive out of the Twin Cities.
This session wasn’t about perfectly folded hands or holding a pose for 30 seconds. It was about real life, in all its glorious unpredictability. Their older son, who has enough energy to power the arboretum’s lighting system, set the tone. Once he got the giggles, the games began. Tag, peekaboo, twirls, and at one point, an impromptu dance party broke out near the hydrangeas. Naturally, his little sister followed his every move like a shadow with a mission.
And that’s where the magic happens. That moment when a toddler’s eyes light up because her brother is being silly. Or when a parent sneaks a knowing glance, half amused, half exhausted, but fully in love. These are the moments that matter. They’re the reason I’m not just a real moments family photographer, I’m a memory preserver, a chaos turns into art chaser.
Let’s be honest, most moms still want one or two of those classic "everyone’s looking and smiling" images. And we got them! I always take a few minutes early in the session (before the sillies really kick in) to grab those. We chose a shaded clearing for the traditional poses and got a handful of those frame worthy, holiday card contenders. But what I love most? The in between.
The laughter after someone tripped on their own shoelaces. The quiet forehead kiss from mom while dad tosses leaves in the background. The real stuff. Because, let’s face it: these are the images that will mean even more in ten years.
If this sounds like the kind of session you’d love but also fear a little, here are a few tips I share with families:
Let go of perfection: You’ll have more fun and get better photos.
Dress for comfort, not just the ‘gram: Layers, textures, and colors that match the season (and your kids’ moods) go a long way.
Arrive fed and rested: Snacks = gold. Always.
Trust your photographer: I’ve done this for 15 years. I’ve seen it all from meltdowns to moonwalks and I’ve turned both into beautiful keepsakes.
Photos like these, the ones where your hair’s a little messy and your kids are being completely themselves, those are the ones that last. These aren’t just "fall family photo ideas" for Pinterest boards. They’re pieces of your story, captured in a season that’s both literal and emotional.
You won’t always remember the date or the weather. But you’ll remember how your daughter mirrored her brother’s wild laugh. How you held hands and played ring around the rosie for the first time since you were a child! How your family felt like itself.
If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, outfit, or behavior, stop. The best sessions happen when you lean into the season you’re in, chaos and all. Let me help you turn it into art.
