Photographing NICU sessions will always hold a special place in my heart. Each one is deeply personal, emotional, and tender in ways that words can barely capture but I try to tell that story through the lens. This particular session took place at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, where I met a tiny warrior who had already overcome so much in just a few short weeks of life.
Born at just 29 weeks and 1 day, this sweet baby was still working through high flow oxygen, an IV line, and a feeding tube but absolutely thriving. When I walked into the hospital room, natural light poured through the window (a rare gift in a NICU setting), and I was greeted by the calm presence of two loving parents, quietly doting on their little one. The space was full of peace, hope, and soft baby yawns — so many adorable yawns! He was truly a little peanut, curled up in his bed, and even in such a clinical environment, the love surrounding him was undeniable.
NICU sessions aren’t like traditional newborn sessions. There are no backdrops, props, or carefully posed moments. Instead, everything is real, raw, and incredibly powerful. These sessions document resilience not just of the baby, but of the parents who are navigating the early days of parenthood in a very different way than they imagined.
As a natural light photographer, I always aim to bring softness and warmth into every image I capture. In NICU settings, I work with what I have often small windows, reflective surfaces, and tight spaces. But even with those limitations, there is always beauty to be found. The connection between parent and child, the tiniest of fingers curled around a thumb, the flutter of sleepy eyes those are the moments that matter most.
I offer complimentary NICU photography sessions as part of my giving back program for families with babies in the NICU. These are some of the most meaningful sessions I do, and it’s truly an honor to provide this service to families navigating such an emotional journey. If you or someone you know has a baby in the NICU at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital or another nearby Twin Cities hospital, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
If you're looking for a NICU photographer in Minneapolis, I’d love to support your family with a gentle, heartfelt session that tells your baby’s unique story. Every NICU journey deserves to be remembered not just for the challenges, but for the love and strength that carried you through it.
