When you run a Christmas tree farm, you don’t exactly get a calm December. Between hauling trees, pouring hot cocoa, and helping families wrangle toddlers in snowsuits, the holidays are full-throttle from sunrise to sunset. So when the owners of the Kavan Family Christmas Tree Farm in Lino Lakes agreed to sneak in a photo session for their own family, I knew we had to make it special.
Spoiler alert: They nailed it.
This post features not only their beautiful family session (sunset, of course—because golden hour is undefeated), but it’s also a love letter to their farm. If you’re considering cutting your own tree this year, or just want some timeless family photos in the most festive setting possible, the Kavan Family Christmas Tree Farm might just be calling your name.
Let’s start with the obvious: the Kavan Family Christmas Tree Farm is legit charming. We’re talking 40 acres of evergreens, a tractor ready to roll, and light music playing to put even the grumpiest uncle in a decent mood. It’s got all the rustic charm of a vintage postcard—but with modern-day treats like free hot cocoa and a solid parking lot (you know I care about the practical stuff too).
This is the kind of place that has generations of trees, a roaring campfire, and the Kavan family greeting you like they’ve known you forever. They grow and offer both cut-your-own and pre-cut trees (6–12 feet tall, if you're wondering), and they’re passionate about helping families make memories—not just transactions.
Depending on what you book—Signature, Petite, or Mini—your session will be tailored to your crew’s needs and your ideal level of chaos. We work together to schedule times that won’t interfere with the farm’s busiest hours, and I always coordinate with the Kavans ahead of time for permission (don’t worry, I’ve got that covered for you).
I prefer sunset sessions for the dreamy light, but we can roll with what works best for your family. These are lifestyle sessions, which means your kids can run, explore, and interact with the trees—no stiff poses, no awkward grins. Just genuine moments that reflect this fleeting season of life (and yes, a little mud too—it’s a farm, after all).
First rule: It’s a Christmas tree farm, not a red carpet. You’ll be walking on grass, gravel, mud or snow, depending on the weather, so leave the stilettos at home. That said, I’m not here to squash your style. If you want to go full glam in a sequin dress and boots, we’ll make it work—just bring backup shoes to walk between tree rows.
I offer a full client wardrobe for Signature and Petite sessions, with pieces that photograph beautifully and print even better. All session types get access to my Looks Book, which includes shoppable outfit boards. My biggest tip? Skip bright red. It may scream “holiday spirit,” but it’s tricky with skin tones and doesn’t always print as well as you think. Soft neutrals, earthy greens, dusty blues, creams, and warm layers = chef’s kiss.
And hey, I get it—sometimes families want to go full matchy-matchy. If that’s your thing, you do you. I’ll make it look good either way.
The Kavan family isn’t just the namesake of the tree farm—they’re the heartbeat of it. Down-to-earth, warm, and hardworking, they’re the kind of people who’ll remember your name even if they met 500 other families that same day. They live just over in North Oaks—basically a hop, skip, and a tree stump away from the farm—and their roots here run deep.
Photographing them on their own land, surrounded by the trees they’ve grown and the memories they’ve made, was something special. These aren’t just photos—they’re legacy, rooted (pun intended) in the place they’ve built with love and literal sweat.
It felt important to document that—not just for them, but to share a glimpse of the people who pour their hearts into this place. A visit to the farm means supporting a family who’s truly present in every part of it, from the tractor rides to the cocoa stand.
Yes, they offer both pre-cut trees and a cut-your-own section (6–8 ft trees). You’ll want to check in with them directly about any tools or assistance—they’re super friendly and will walk you through what’s needed.
For photo sessions, yes—coordinate with me so I can get permission from the farm and find the right time. For tree shopping, walk-ins are typically welcome during their open season, but always check their website or social media for updates.
Layers! It’s outdoors, and Minnesota weather loves to surprise us. Avoid bright reds and neon tones. I offer a curated wardrobe and monthly Looks Book to make styling super easy.
Yes! The farm allows pets, but they do need to be on a leash—especially if your furry friend isn’t exactly known for listening the first time. Be mindful of other families visiting, and let me know ahead of time so we can plan your session accordingly.
Oh, it’s festive. Think campfire, straw play area for the kids, a vintage tractor, light music in the background, and yes—free hot chocolate. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay awhile (and maybe start a new tradition).
The Kavan Family Christmas Tree Farm is more than just a festive backdrop—it’s a real place, run by real people, where you can make real memories. Whether you’re picking out the perfect fir or capturing a season of life in photos, this farm delivers every time.
If you’ve been dreaming about holiday photos without the glitter overload, or just want to celebrate the most chaotic, wonderful time of year in a way that feels grounded (pun intended again), let’s chat.
And if you’re just here for the tree? You can’t go wrong with the Kavans. Just don’t forget to grab the cocoa.
Spots are limited and sunset waits for no one. Reach out directly to grab your spot.
