5 Creative Ways to Include Siblings in Newborn Photos

5 Creative Ways to Incorporate Siblings in Your Newborn Photoshoot

As a Minneapolis newborn photographer, I know that adding siblings into a newborn session can be both heartwarming and a little unpredictable—especially if the big sibling is still a toddler! My goal is always to keep things simple, comfortable, and fun while capturing those sweet first moments between siblings.

Here are five creative (and realistic) ways to incorporate big brothers and sisters into your newborn session.

1. The Letter Board Moment

A simple yet meaningful way to include siblings is by having them hold a letter board with a special message. Whether it says “I’m the big sister!” or includes the baby’s birth details, this setup adds a personal touch. Some kids proudly hold the board up, while others interact with it—pointing to the words or showing it to their new baby sibling. The result? Sweet, candid images with a storytelling element.

2. The Sticker Search Game

Toddlers can be, well, toddlers. If a big sibling isn’t too sure about this whole photo thing, I love using a fun little game to spark their curiosity. I’ll hide tiny stickers inside the folds of the baby’s wrap (don’t worry, they’re easy to remove!), and big brother or sister gets to ‘search’ for them. It turns sibling photos into a fun and engaging experience instead of feeling like a forced pose. And the best part? Those little moments of discovery often lead to adorable, natural reactions.

3. The Gentle Hands Approach

Sometimes, the simplest interactions create the most touching images. Instead of expecting a big sibling to hold the newborn (which isn’t always safe or practical), I guide them to gently touch baby’s toes, hold a tiny hand, or lean in for a sweet forehead touch. These small gestures create timeless photos that highlight the new bond forming between siblings—without overwhelming them.  And if they don't want to kiss baby, I ask them to smell baby.  And then ask what baby smells like?

4. The Family Snuggle

Nothing beats a cozy family cuddle session. I love capturing the natural connection between parents, baby, and big sibling as they snuggle together. Whether it's on my white studio bed or in the comfort of your home, this setup allows siblings to be part of the session without pressure. They can curl up next to baby, rest their head on a parent’s shoulder, or simply be in the moment. It’s relaxed, organic, and always results in beautiful, heartfelt images.

5. The Movement Moment

Some kids just aren’t the sit-and-smile type—and that’s okay! For active toddlers and young children, I embrace movement. Maybe they dance around baby while holding mom’s hand, give baby a quick kiss and run back for a high-five, or stand on tiptoes to peek at baby in a bassinet. By keeping things playful and letting kids move naturally, we capture images that feel genuine and full of personality.

Making Sibling Photos Stress-Free

Bringing a new baby into the family is a big adjustment for older siblings, and I never expect them to sit perfectly still or follow a script. Instead, I create an environment where they can be themselves—whether that means playing a little game, offering a gentle touch, or simply snuggling up as a family.

If you’re expecting and want timeless, heartfelt newborn photos that include big siblings in a natural and stress-free way, let’s chat! These moments pass by so quickly, and I’d love to help you document them in a way that feels real and meaningful to your family.
