Autumn Family Photoshoot Tips to Make Your Fall Session Easy (and Fun!) in Minnesota

Planning a fall family photo session in Minnesota? Get expert tips from a Minneapolis family photographer to make your autumn family photoshoot easy and fun.

There’s just something magical about fall in Minnesota. The golden leaves, crisp air, cozy sweaters, and the perfect excuse to order a second pumpkin spice latte (or third—I’m not judging). It’s no wonder autumn is the busiest season for family photos. But if the thought of wrangling your wildlings into coordinated outfits and convincing everyone to smile in unison feels a little overwhelming, I’m here to help.

As a Minnesota family photographer with over 15 years of experience, I’ve learned what makes a fall session actually fun—and spoiler alert: it’s not bribing your toddler with M&M’s (though, hey, no judgment if you try). Let’s dive into how to make your autumn family photoshoot feel easy, enjoyable, and yes—maybe even a little magical.

Wondering what to wear for your autumn family photoshoot? This guide has styling advice, location ideas, and real-talk tips from a seasoned Twin Cities photographer.

Why Fall is the Perfect Season for a Family Photoshoot in Minnesota

Minnesota doesn’t mess around when it comes to fall. The trees show off like they’re auditioning for a postcard, the light turns buttery and soft, and even your dog looks cuter with a scarf. It’s peak cozy season.

But beyond the aesthetics, fall is just practical for family photos. The weather is cooler (read: less sweaty chaos), kids are back in a rhythm with school (i.e. the teachers have taught them to listen), and the backdrop? Unreal.

Looking for more ways to enjoy the season outside of your session? This roundup of the best fall hikes in Minnesota features gorgeous local trails and tips for making the most of peak leaf season.

Whether you’re strolling through Tamarack Nature Center’s crunchy trails or tossing leaves in your backyard, it’s the perfect setting to document your crew as they are right now.

Plus, let’s be honest: you were going to put those adorable boots and cable knit sweaters on your kids anyway. Might as well have the photos to prove it.

Candid moments, cozy layers, and golden leaves—this fall family photo session guide has everything you need to know before your autumn photoshoot in Minnesota.

Top Tips to Make Your Fall Family Photo Session Easy (and Fun!)

1. Plan for Layers (But Don’t Overthink It)

Fall fashion was practically made for family photos. Layers add visual interest and texture to your images—think cozy knits, boots, linen dresses with cardigans, and soft scarves. But here’s your permission slip: you don’t have to buy everyone a whole new outfit.

Start with a neutral palette and add pops of color or pattern here and there. Avoid logos, neon, and too many competing patterns. If you’re not sure what looks good together, I’ve got you. My studio wardrobe includes dresses for moms, shirts for dads, and adorable outfits for kiddos under 5. Or if you prefer your own clothing, check out my monthly Looks Book with 10 ready-to-go outfit ideas.

And yes, you can wear jeans if they’re not the baggy ones you garden in.

2. Timing is Everything

You’ve heard of golden hour, right? That magical hour before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and forgiving? That’s when we want to shoot. In the fall, golden hour comes early—sometimes as early as 5:00 p.m.—so weekday evenings can work well.

Planning ahead helps a lot. I open fall booking in July because these sessions fill up quickly (and moms are planners). Pick your date early so you get the best light and peak color. And yes, I’ll help you decide when the leaves will be showing off in your favorite location.

3. Let the Kids Be Kids

Here’s the thing: your kids don’t have to sit still and smile to get beautiful photos. In fact, I hope they don’t. I take a child-led approach, meaning we follow their lead, play games, get silly, and keep it light. Want to throw leaves in the air? Let’s do it. Need a minute to snuggle in mom’s arms? Even better.

The best images aren’t the ones where everyone looks perfect—they’re the ones that feel like you. So if someone’s shoeless by the end, or giggling uncontrollably while dad’s got them on his shoulders, trust me—we’re on the right track.

4. Choose a Location That Works for Your Family

I know it’s tempting to scroll Instagram and look for the most dramatic vista or the most colorful tree tunnel. But honestly? The best location is the one that feels right for your family.

That might be a golden field at Tamarack Nature Center, a tree-lined path at Como Park, or your own backyard where the kids feel most relaxed. I’ve photographed sessions on city sidewalks, in family gardens, and once in a patch of weeds that turned out to be pure magic. If you're not sure, I’ll guide you based on what vibe you're after—urban, forest, or field—and when the light will be best.

Also, let's not forget that some locations require permits (I’ll help you with that), and weekends can get busy—so I often recommend weekday evenings if you can swing it.  Because honestly there are some locations I will not photograph at during the fall on weekends.  It's too crowded, I've learned over the years it's not worth the hassle and stress to fight over space with other photographers and families.

5. Trust Your Photographer (That’s Me!)

You don’t have to do this alone. When you book with me, you get access to a suite of planning tools: style guides, location suggestions, email tips, and even outfit consultations from the studio wardrobe.

We don’t have to schedule a two-hour strategy session.  I’m just an email away if you need help pulling outfits together or deciding between Como and your cul-de-sac.

And when we’re shooting? I’ll tell you where to stand, how to hold your baby so they don’t look like a marshmallow, and what to do with your hands. I’ve got you.

Real Talk: What a Fall Session Actually Feels Like

Let’s set the scene. You’ve made it to the session—everyone’s dressed, the socks mostly match, and you're probably hoping at least one kid smiles. But here's the thing: you don’t need to do anything else now. I’ve got it from here.

You don’t need to track the weather (I’ll keep you posted). You don’t need to memorize Pinterest poses. You just need to be present with your people.

During the session, I’ll guide you into a cozy spot and help you settle in. Then I’ll ask something like, “Remember the last time you were all together on vacation? What did you do? How did it feel?” And just like that, you're reminiscing. Maybe someone cracks a joke about dad’s snorkeling skills, or your oldest brings up that wild ice cream shop. Laughter starts bubbling up, shoulders drop, and the energy shifts.

The best fall photos aren’t about posing or perfection. They’re about connection. Real interactions. That little spark between you.

One of my favorite recent sessions was with a family who brought their kids in cozy neutral knits, gave them a pile of leaves to toss, and just let them be. The parents barely “posed” at all—and those photos? Absolutely stunning. Natural, real, and full of personality.

FAQ: Autumn Family Photoshoot Edition

Q: What if it rains on the day of our session?
A: Welcome to Minnesota! If the weather looks iffy, I’ll reach out with options. You’ll always decide whether to move forward, reschedule, or shift indoors—if we move to the studio, we’ll just adjust the time for earlier in the day. If it’s pouring, we’ll reschedule. All of this will be discussed ahead of time so there are no surprises.

Q: How long is the session?
A: Sessions typically last about 45 minutes, but they’re not strictly timed. We allow enough time to get what we need, and I’ll guide the pacing based on your kids.

Q: What should we wear?
A: Neutrals, textures, and layers photograph beautifully in fall light. Avoid busy patterns or bright colors that compete with the natural setting. You can borrow from my studio wardrobe or use the style guides and Looks Book I send out.

Q: Can we include our dog? Or the grandparents?
A: Absolutely—just let me know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly. Dogs are welcome, though some locations don’t allow them, so we’ll want to choose the right spot. Grandparents are always welcome too, but they are considered extended family and there is an additional charge.

Q: What’s your turnaround time?
A: You’ll get your gallery within 3 weeks. I’ll send you a curated slideshow first, and you’ll choose one of 3 collections afterwards.  Each collection includes digital files and a print credit.

Q: Are weekends available?
A: I book limited weekend slots in the fall—and they go fast. If you’re flexible, weekday evenings are usually the sweet spot for lighting and fewer crowds.

Q: What if my toddler melts down mid-session?
A: First of all: totally normal. I always plan sessions around play, movement, and natural moments. We don’t force smiles—we create an experience where they’re likely to happen anyway.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Beautiful
