Let’s talk about one of my favorite things: studio family photos in Minnesota. Now, I know what you’re thinking—getting the whole family dressed, making sure no one has peanut butter on their face, hoping the toddler doesn’t stage a rebellion, and then adding not one but two German Shepherds into the mix? Sounds like a recipe for chaos, right?
Not with this crew.
Last September, I had the pleasure of photographing a laid-back family of four in my natural light studio. They brought calm, sweetness, and yes—dogs that could’ve taught a course in studio etiquette. It was one of those sessions where even when things didn’t go quite according to plan (hello, toddler meltdown), the vibe stayed light, the images stayed beautiful, and no one needed a post-session glass of wine (though I wouldn’t have judged). And actually I think I did send them home with a bottle of prosecco!
Let’s dive into the highlights of this session and what makes studio family photos in Minnesota so magical—even with two big dogs and a toddler in tow.
Here’s a little behind-the-scenes secret: this entire family was styled from my curated studio wardrobe. Yup—no last-minute Target runs, no panic over “do these pants still fit?” and definitely no arguments over what shirt dad should wear but doesn’t want to iron. (IYKYK.)
Mom wore a soft blue maxi dress that looked effortless and elegant. Dad went with a classic light blue sweater layered over a collared shirt—relaxed but still photo-worthy. Big sister’s white floral dress was the perfect match for her flower crown (which mom brought—serious bonus points for accessories). And little brother? He wore the cutest linen matching short set that I’m still swooning over. I mean, come on. That outfit deserved its own round of applause.
The wardrobe process is one of my favorite parts of the session. Not because I’m a fashionista (unless yoga pants count), but because it takes a huge weight off your shoulders. You show up. I’ve got you covered. No stress. No second guessing. Just timeless looks that photograph beautifully.
My natural light studio in Minnesota is designed for simplicity and calm. Think of it as a blank canvas with really flattering light. Kids don’t feel overwhelmed, parents can breathe a little easier, and yes—even the dogs find a comfy corner to chill out in.
This family embraced that energy from the start. The kids walked in like pros—big sister with a quiet confidence and little brother with his adorable curiosity. They sat on stools, cuddled with mom and dad, giggled with each other… and then, about halfway through, little brother decided he was done.
And you know what? That’s totally normal.
We took a break. Gave him a little space. Let him regroup without anyone making a big fuss. (Honestly, adults could learn a thing or two from toddlers about setting boundaries.)
Not even ten minutes later? He was back, smiling and giving us exactly what we needed. Not forced. Not bribed. Just a moment to catch his breath and reset.
So if you’re ever worried your toddler won’t cooperate during your studio family photos in Minnesota, please know: meltdowns are not only expected—they’re practically part of the job. And we roll with it.
Now let’s talk about the real MVPs of this session: the two old German Shepherds.
I know people worry about bringing pets into a studio. “What if they bark?” “What if they shed everywhere?” “What if they sit on the white furniture?” Valid concerns. But these two? Gold-star behavior. They posed. They relaxed. They gave me better eye contact than some humans I’ve photographed (no offense).
The dogs added such a sweet touch to the session. After all, they’re part of the family too. Including pets in studio photos adds a layer of warmth and authenticity that can’t be recreated. Plus, for older dogs especially, these photos become such a meaningful keepsake. I’m so glad we included them. One of the biggest myths about studio photography is that it’s stiff or too formal. But honestly, some of my most candid, connected, joy-filled images come from studio sessions. Why? Because there’s no need to perform. No distractions. Just your family, being yourselves.
This family showed up as exactly that—themselves. Laid-back. Loving. Ready for snuggles and silliness and a little spontaneity. That’s all I ask. You don’t have to “do” anything special. No fake smiles or awkward poses. Just trust the process.
I guide families gently through poses that feel natural. I look for real connection. And when little kids decide to do their own thing, I adjust. That’s part of the beauty of what I do. I capture your family, not a perfect version of one.
So whether your toddler wants to sit on your lap the whole time or your dog insists on being in every shot, I promise: the magic will be there.
There’s something really wonderful about family photos in the studio. Maybe it’s the consistency of light. Maybe it’s the peaceful environment. Or maybe it’s the fact that you don’t have to worry about whether the grass is too long or the mosquitoes are out for blood.
Studio sessions give us flexibility without fuss. You don’t have to worry about the weather, the wind, or wrangling your toddler into shoes. You walk in. You get dressed in beautiful, flattering clothes from my wardrobe. You have a calm, low-pressure session. And you walk out with images you’ll actually want to hang on your walls.
For families who want simplicity, comfort, and timeless photos, a studio session is a no-brainer. And if you’re bringing dogs, toddlers, or just your own sweet chaos? Even better.
Come As You Are (Yes, Even With Dogs)
This session was such a sweet reminder that the best photos come from relaxed energy, a little flexibility, and a whole lot of love. Whether you’re wrangling kids, calming down a dog, or just trying to get out the door without forgetting the diaper bag—you’re doing great.
If you’ve been considering booking your own Minnesota studio family photos, let this be your sign to go for it. Bring the kids. Bring the dog. Bring yourself exactly as you are.
