A cake smash session is such a sweet way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday and document that joyful, curious, squishy stage before it turns into full toddler energy. It’s not just about the cake, although the frosting-covered fingers and messy little faces are definitely part of the fun. Whether your baby dives in hands first or cautiously pokes at the frosting like it personally offended them, every reaction is worth remembering. These sessions also include simple portraits beforehand, with tiny toes, big smiles, and all that one-year-old personality starting to shine through. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to celebrate your baby turning one and create images that will make you smile long after the cake is gone.

If you’re planning your first cake smash session, you might be wondering what actually happens, what to bring, and whether your baby will even touch the cake. Do not worry, you are definitely not alone. Most parents have not done this before. Below are a few helpful tips to make the whole process smoother and way more fun for both you and your baby.

Cake Smash Session Tips for Your Baby’s First Birthday

What to Expect During a Cake Smash Session

A cake smash session usually starts with simple portraits before the cake comes out. This gives your baby a chance to settle in, warm up to the camera, and show off all those sweet one-year-old details before frosting enters the chat.

After that, the cake comes out and your baby gets to explore. Some babies are all in right away. Some need a little encouragement. Some look at the cake like it has personally betrayed them. All of it is normal, and honestly, all of it photographs beautifully.

Pick the Right Photographer for Your Cake Smash Session

You want someone who not only takes beautiful photos but also knows how to work with little ones, because babies are not exactly known for following a shot list.

A photographer with experience working with children will know how to coax out those sweet expressions, keep things calm, and roll with the chaos if your little one decides they are more interested in crawling away than smashing the cake.

The best cake smash session starts with a little planning and a photographer who knows how to keep the experience baby-led, relaxed, and fun.

Do a practice run. Cake smash sessions are adorable, but they can also be a little overwhelming—bright lights, new textures, a room full of adults encouraging your baby to do something they’re not used to. Try giving them a cupcake or a mini cake at home a week or so before your session. Let them touch, taste, and explore it. No pressure. Just a fun little preview to get them used to the idea.

Pick a theme that feels personal. While you don’t have to go with a theme, it can help pull everything together—from the outfit and background to the cake design. Think favorite books, colors, toys, or even just a certain vibe (minimal and neutral? All-out color? Sweet and classic?). A theme helps the session feel more connected to your child’s personality—and it makes decisions about the setup a lot easier.

Choose the right cake. This is key! Skip fondant—it looks cute but can be tough for tiny hands to dig into. Instead, go for something soft and smashable, like whipped cream or buttercream frosting. Stick with a small to medium-sized cake (no need to go overboard), and try to avoid anything with hard decorations or dyes that stain easily. If your baby has never had cake before, consider checking for any food sensitivities ahead of time.

Planning to bake your own? This easy smash cake with yogurt frosting is baby-friendly and super cute—perfect for first birthday portraits.

So what should you bring along to a cake smash photography session? Great question—and trust me, a little prep goes a long way in making the session run smoothly.

Wipes and a change of clothes are a must. Things will get messy—like frosting-in-the-hair and crumbs-down-the-diaper messy. Bring plenty of wet wipes, a towel or burp cloth, and a full change of clothes for your baby (and maybe for yourself too, just in case you end up in the splash zone). A plastic bag for the frosting-covered outfit can be a lifesaver too.

Let the cake warm up. If your cake needs to be refrigerated beforehand, make sure to take it out a bit before the session. A cold cake can be too firm for little hands to smash into easily—and half the fun is watching them dig right in! Room temperature cake is easier to handle and just looks better in photos when it’s all delightfully smushed.

Check in with your photographer about the setup. Every photographer does things a little differently, so be sure to ask what’s included. At my studio, for example, I keep the setup simple and timeless, but if you’re hoping to incorporate a specific theme, we’ll chat ahead of time about what you’d like to bring and how to tie everything together. Some parents bring a banner, a custom cake topper, or a favorite stuffed animal to add a personal touch.

Bringing siblings? Bring backup. I know how tempting it is to try to make it a full family affair, but if you’re bringing other kids along, it’s super helpful to have an extra adult to wrangle them. That way, you can focus on your baby’s big moment without having to multitask—and I can keep my camera focused where it matters most. (P.S. We can always do a few sibling shots at the beginning if you want!)

And most importantly—have fun with it. A cake smash session is meant to be playful and joyful, not picture-perfect. Your baby might smash the cake with wild enthusiasm… or they might poke it delicately and look at you like, “Are you sure this is okay?” Either way, it’s all part of the story. Try not to stress about how your little one reacts or whether everything goes according to plan. I’ve seen it all—tears, giggles, total frosting faceplants—and it always turns out sweet in its own way.

Trust your photographer (that’s me!) to guide the session and capture those in-between moments that you’ll love the most. The messy fingers, the big belly laughs, even the uncertain glances—they’re all part of the charm. So take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the experience. Your baby only turns one once, and these photos will always remind you of this fleeting, delightfully chaotic stage.
