If you’ve ever spent the night before family photos knee-deep in laundry, whisper-yelling at your partner about why every shirt suddenly has a stain, this one’s for you. Deciding what to wear for family photos shouldn’t feel like solving a Rubik’s Cube and yet, here we are.
As someone who’s photographed hundreds of families across the Twin Cities, I’ve learned that the best sessions don’t come from Pinterest-perfect outfits. They come from comfortable, timeless choices that let your love, laughter, and occasional toddler chaos shine through.
Whether your session is outdoors among Minnesota’s fall colors or in my cozy Northeast Minneapolis studio, this guide will help you feel confident, coordinated, and completely yourself. Because when you look good and feel good, that connection shines in every image and that’s what makes family photography in the Twin Cities so special.
Here is my philosophy in a nutshell. Outfits should be comfortable, timeless, and true to your family’s personality. You do not need to show up in matching jeans and white shirts. This is not 1998, and no one needs to look like a boy band album cover. The goal is not perfection. It is connection.
Clothing should never steal the spotlight from your story. Think of it as the background music that sets the tone without ever overpowering the melody. When everyone feels comfortable and authentic, your photos will have that effortless quality that no trend can recreate.
And if you are thinking, “But I do not have anything like that,” take a deep breath. Every client who books a session with me gets full access to my studio wardrobe filled with hand-picked pieces for moms, dads, and little ones. You also receive my monthly Looks Book, which includes clickable outfit inspiration so you can shop or simply pull similar pieces from your own closet.
It is my way of making the entire process easy and enjoyable. Planning what to wear should feel like part of the excitement, not an extra chore on your to-do list.
When it comes to what photographs beautifully, neutral and soft tones are always a win. Creams, beige, soft blues, blush, and muted greens create a calm and cohesive look that keeps the focus where it belongs, on your family’s connection.
Start by choosing three or four colors that complement one another. If you are planning a spring session surrounded by blooming trees, try light tones like ivory, blush, or sage green. For fall family photography in the Twin Cities, warm neutrals such as camel, oatmeal, and muted rust tones bring cozy energy without feeling heavy or distracting.
You do not want everyone in identical shades. Instead, think of harmony. Choose a combination of solids and soft patterns that feel balanced and natural. It should look intentional, but never overly planned. The goal is to create visual flow, not to look like a uniformed team ready for a commercial.
Here is the secret every experienced photographer knows. Everything revolves around what Mom wears. Once you find something that makes you feel confident and comfortable, the rest of the family’s wardrobe falls into place.
If you wear a flowy dress with subtle texture, pull complementary colors from it for your partner and children. You will thank yourself later when your final gallery looks cohesive and effortless.
And if your partner says, “I’ll just wear whatever,” that works as long as “whatever” happens to coordinate with the color palette you have chosen.
Choose clothing that feels natural. If your toddler hates scratchy collars or your baby’s outfit takes two adults to button, skip it. You want to move, snuggle, and play without worrying about wardrobe malfunctions. The best photos come when you can simply enjoy being together.
Texture is what gives your photos depth and dimension. It adds interest without needing bold colors or loud prints. Soft knits, lace, linen, and layered fabrics photograph beautifully in natural light.
A chunky knit sweater brings cozy charm to a fall outdoor session. A lace or gauzy dress creates gentle movement during a studio motherhood portrait. A linen romper on a baby during milestone photos feels both timeless and sweet.
If your session happens in my Minneapolis studio, I often mix textures intentionally. For example, a ribbed onesie on a baby beside a smooth linen dress on mom creates beautiful contrast that adds warmth and sophistication to your gallery.
Keep accessories minimal and classic. A delicate necklace, a soft scarf, or a simple headband can elevate a look without distracting from your faces. The idea is to look timeless, not trendy.
Minnesota gives us a full rotation of weather moods, and each season brings its own personality. Choosing outfits that complement the environment can elevate your photos effortlessly.
Spring: Light and airy fabrics always work. Pastels, cream, and blush blend beautifully with blooming trees and fresh greens.
Summer: Breezy neutrals with touches of muted color look perfect against sunny backdrops. Think easy dresses, linen shirts, and barefoot moments with your kids.
Fall: This is where texture shines. Knits, cardigans, and boots in warm neutrals bring that cozy feeling we all love. Whether your family session takes place at Tamarack Nature Center or Como Park, the tones of fall family photography in the Twin Cities never disappoint.
Winter: Studio sessions take center stage when the temperature drops. Long dresses, soft sweaters, and bare feet keep the look refined yet comfortable. The simplicity of the studio allows emotion and connection to stand out even more.
One of my favorite parts of working with clients is taking the stress out of wardrobe planning. Every session includes access to my carefully curated studio wardrobe, filled with pieces chosen for their flattering fits, timeless fabrics, and classic tones. The wardrobe includes selections for moms, dads, and little ones under five, so you can walk into your session knowing everyone will look effortlessly coordinated.
For families who prefer to wear their own clothing, or simply enjoy shopping for something new, my monthly Looks Book makes the process easy. Each edition features ten outfit combinations with clickable links for moms, dads, babies, and older kids. The Looks Book is updated regularly, so it always feels current and seasonally inspired. It is the perfect tool whether you want to mix in your own favorites, fill in the gaps for older children, or simply see how colors and textures pair beautifully together.
For on-location sessions, families are welcome to schedule a wardrobe consultation before their session. You can come in, browse, and try on outfits in person. Once you have made your selections, I will bring those pieces with me to your session so you do not have to worry about a thing on the day of. Yes I even have a changing tent if we are outside.
My goal is for you to look and feel amazing while keeping the process relaxed and enjoyable. After all, family photography in the Twin Cities should be joyful, not stressful. You should be thinking about which playground to visit after your session, not which shoes might clash with your toddler’s sweater.
Neutral and soft tones work beautifully. Creams, beige, blush, and muted blues or greens look polished and natural both indoors and outdoors. These tones allow your family’s emotions to take center stage without distraction.
Yes, but keep them gentle. Small floral prints or textured fabrics photograph best. Avoid loud graphics or large patterns that can steal focus from your faces. Subtlety always wins in photographs meant to last for generations.
For outdoor sessions, pull inspiration from nature. Earthy tones and soft layers will harmonize with your surroundings. For studio sessions, stick with lighter colors and softer fabrics that photograph beautifully against a clean backdrop.
Think of it like dressing for a dear friend’s wedding — not necessarily black tie, but a moment that deserves a little extra effort. Even for people who do not normally dress up, something shifts when you do. You stand taller, feel more confident, and yes, you want photos to prove it. That is exactly the kind of energy that photographs beautifully.
I am always here for a touch of sophistication, whether that means a flowing dress, a tailored shirt, or a beautifully pressed jumpsuit. Aim for outfits that feel special and intentional, the kind you would happily wear to celebrate someone you love. After all, your session is a celebration of your family. When you feel amazing, it shows — and that is what makes your gallery timeless.
That is exactly why I offer my studio wardrobe and monthly Looks Book. Once you book your family photography session in the Twin Cities, I will guide you through the entire process. From outfit ideas to coordinating colors, you will have everything you need to feel confident and prepared. And yes you can text me from the mall asking if something will work.
